Montauk daisy is an unusual plant with a dramatic appearance. It's a great addition to any garden that's looking for a little late-season color. The plant also has a pungent odor that deters rabbits and deer. Despite these differences, the Montauk daisy has a very similar culture to garden mums. This makes it a good companion to your garden mum program.

Growing Tips

Warm temperatures are required for growing. Montauk daisies are cold hardy, but they grow during the summer. This tendency makes them an easy-to-force perennial. Night temperatures must stay above 65 degrees F when forcing for flowering. Cold temperatures cause the plant to remain vegetative. When growing in Spring, plants will require heat at nights.

Montauk daisies flower under short days. Natural-season is the end of September across North America, but blackcloth can be used to force blooms if you want to sales earlier in the season. Under blackcloth, flowering takes about 7 weeks.

Plants require approximately 1.5 times more long days after pinch than garden mums, meaning the vegetative growth is slightly slower. Before blackcloth treatment starts, provide night interruption to get a proper plant size.

Montauk daisies take up a little less space. You should add at least one more cutting per pot compared to garden mums.

Planting Liners

  1. Plant deep so the top of our ellepot is slightly below the soil level in your container. It is especially hard to plant deep in a growing media with a high content of pine bark. Slow down the transplant line, and do it right.
  2. Plant in the center. This will eliminate any issue of lopsided, wobbly plants at finish. There is a chance you had 10-15% plugs planted off-center last season.
  3. Pinching is required. You will also need to use additional plants per pot and longer growing times to finish out a nice pot.

Rooted Cuttings

Cuttings vary in size between different plant families. These rooted starter plants will arrive ready to be transplanted in to your final container. If they are to be used in a landscape application, you will need to establish them in a 4 inch pot or an 1801 before planting outside.
